Nes Kirkeruiner, Vormsund 🇳🇴

Initially built in the 12th-century, Nes church was burnt down by the Swedes in 1567. It was then rebuilt in the shape of a cross in 1697 before the Swedes burnt it down again in 1854. The church was not rebuilt, although conservation work started in the twentieth century, and the ruins are now the perfect place for everything from small picnics to concerts.

Despite its history, there are no ghosts of unfortunate churchgoers who were burned alive, and Swedes visiting the ruins are no more at risk of a haunting than anyone else. Yet visitors have reported experiencing a pressure on their chest, difficulty moving, troubles with their electronic equipment, and glimpsing shadows and figures disappearing behind corners.

The main suspect behind these experiences is Jacob Christian Finckenhagen, a priest at the church who died in 1837. By some accounts, Finckenhagen was a rather formidable figure in the community and died a rich man, despite his lowly occupation.
Some stories say that he died of old age, while others say he hung himself in his church. Other stories claim that the ghosts are actually his children, who are allegedly buried behind the altar.

Toftaholm Herrgård, Vittaryd 🇸🇪

This hotel was once a manor house, owned by a wealthy baron. The baron had an attractive young daughter, and a young man fell in love with her.

Unfortunately for the young man, he was a commoner, and the baron refused to allow a marriage. Instead, he found a suitable husband for his daughter (suitable for the baron, anyway). On the morning of the wedding, the young man hanged himself from a beam in the manor house.

The room where he committed suicide is now Room 324; it is said to be haunted by his unhappy ghost.

Cemetery of the Insane, Rekem 🇧🇪

A burial site that belonged to the close-by psychiatric hospital. The cemetery was founded in 1921 and until 1981 about 1750 male patients were buried here. In those days patients were institutionalized for life with little or no contact with relatives.

The cemetery is situated in a forest with six open areas where the graves are lined up in order of burial. The graves are marked by simple concrete crosses with small plates holding the name and dates of birth and death. Some exceptions were a few wrought iron crosses and couple of grave stones.

Maison Clercx, Het Hobos, Pelt 🇧🇪

There are many urban legends about the Clercx family.

The family used to hunt the "Bokkenrijders". According to popular belief, the Buckriders were ghosts, who fly through the sky on the back of goats. During the 18th century, groups of thieves and other criminals used this belief to frighten farmers. These criminals raided peaceful convents, churches and farms.

Mr. Clerckx swore to wipe out all of these thieves and he succeeded. Stories go that he locked up criminals and starved them. Those who were not brought to the basement were hung.

Hermitage Castle, Newcastleton 🇬🇧

Hermitage Castle is the archetypal border castle. During the Middle Ages it changed hands several times between the Scots and the English.
The first structure on this site was built in the 14th century and was an oblong erected around a small courtyard. It was rebuilt a few decades later by the Douglas lairds when it became a very large tower house.
Today the castle is more or less just a shell of the original castle but it is imposing enough to conjure up ghostly images in the mind of the visitor.  There are two main ghosts which are supposed to haunt Hermitage Castle.

Old Town, Edinburgh Vaults, Edinburgh 🇬🇧

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and one of its 32 council areas. Historically part of the county of Midlothian, it is located in Lothian on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. Edinburgh is Scotland’s second-most populous city and the seventh-most populous city in the United Kingdom.

The Edinburgh Vaults or South Bridge Vaults are a series of chambers formed in the nineteen arches of the South Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland, was part of the South Bridge Act 1785 and was completed in 1788. For around 30 years, the vaults were used to house taverns, workshops for cobblers and other tradesmen, as well as storage space for said merchants.

St Peter’s Church, Chillingham 🇬🇧

Tucked into a wooded setting beside the entrance to Chillingham Castle stands the attractive Norman church of St Peter. Though the church was begun in the 12th century, very little remains of the earliest building and much of what we see today dates to the 15th century.
