Bodominjärvi, Espoo 🇫🇮

The Lake Bodom murders is one of the most infamous unsolved homicide cases in Finnish criminal history.

On 5 June 1960, at Bodom Lake, 15-year-old girls Maila Irmeli Björklund and Anja Tuulikki Mäki and 18-year-old man Seppo Antero Boisman were killed by stabbing and blunt-force trauma to their heads, while sleeping inside a tent. The fourth youth, Nils Gustafsson, then 18 years old, was found outside the tent with broken facial bones and stab wounds.

Despite extensive investigations, the perpetrator was never identified and various theories on the killer’s identity have been presented over the years. Gustafsson was unexpectedly arrested on suspicion of committing the murders in 2004, but he was found not guilty the following year.

Olavinlinna, Savonlinna 🇫🇮

By far the most famous story of Olavinlinna is the tragic love story of the Finnish maiden.

The daughter of the castle’s Lord was in love with a Russian soldier and one night she opened the castle gate to let him in. But she was betrayed by her lover when he brought more soldiers with him. The Russian forces were fought off and the traitorous lover was killed in the attack. The maiden was sentenced to death for treason and buried alive in the wall of the courtyard.

Shortly afterwards a rowan tree grew on the burial spot and the white flowers which bloomed on the tree were said to be symbolic of the girl’s innocence.

Borgvattnets Prästgård, Borgvattnet 🇸🇪

Borgvattnet Spökprästgård, was built in 1876. The first ghost stories came to surface in 1927, when vicar Nils Hedlund wrote about it in a letter. His mother, Marta, died in the house in 1907 during childbirth. His father, Per, couldn’t face the fact his wife passed away and he buried her in the backyard. When the locals found out a couple of days later, they demanded him to bury Marta at the cemetery.

Per agreed, but the next day the whole Hedlund family had disappeared, along with Marta’s body. Nils Hedlund came back to live at the vicarage after his father died. He saw all his laundry being pulled from the drying rack in the garden. There was no wind that day and he could clearly see the laundry was being pulled. And he wasn’t the last person to be affected by the hauntings.
